A lot of people (from other forums I go to where people ask about living in LA) would recommend living in Echo Park because it's really cheap and right outside of downtown (also by the dodger stadium, if you care). For a little more, you can live in Silverlake, which I was told is a better location. There used a lot of gang activity in the 90s, but not so much anymore. Lots of young people are moving to those areas, making it really "hip." Lots of vegan cafes, venues for local bands and whatnot. They're relatively safe areas.. I mean, I never feel scared being there, like in Inglewood or South gate, but I also wouldn't go into back allies at night by myself.
Culver City is also affordable and less dense since it's farther out.
If you have more monies, West Hollywood is full of hot gay guys. Pasadena is nice (also less dense), but I'm sure it's more expensive.
If you want to go live with the Asians, they have good food.. especially dim sum, but be prepared to be an angry driver. Everyone there will piss you off. I'm not sure about the renting cost there.
Because it's Spanish, I want to pronounce it "los feh-LEEZ" but several people in the area have informed me it is called "los FAY-leez." It makes me sad. Then again, in Virginia, there is a town called Buena Vista. It is not pronounced "BWAY-no VEEZ-tah" but rather "BYOO-no VIZZ-tah." I survived.
In fact, shouldn't Los Angeles itself be pronounced with a "soft" g? Like the H sound, not the J sound. And nobody ever pronounces it "Los", it's always "Las". YER DOIN' IT WRONG, MURRICA.

I was working in Downtown today and will be there for the next couple of weeks. A homeless man walked in the Subway sandwich shop today spilling soda and asking for change....so if you're into that I think you'll like it there.

I just remembered that it was even worse than this. They kept saying "los FEE-liz."
It really shouldn't bother me as much as it does. It's not like I insist on saying "creppe" instead of "crayp" when describing everyone's favorite French pancake.

Bumping this old ass topic.
I never have to say Los Feliz, but from my understanding they do say fee-liz and that sounds really dumb to me.
I also just realized that they say San Pee-dro for San Pedro. Isn't that weird?
