Platano really refers to plantains, which are eaten much more frequently in Latin America than are bananas. Because they look so much alike, bananas are often called platanos, but "banana" is also used. Hence the word for a banana tree "bananero."

In Spanish, "banana" is said with the accent on the first syllable.
