Bad Religion - The Dissent of Man

If anyone cares, it is streaming on their myspace at this moment.

Here is a play-by-play review.  My initial reactions from song to song

I actually like the first track "The Day The Earth Stalled". It's got a Process of Belief feel to it. Very fast but well-polished. The Oo's and Ah's are in full force and as good as they get on this track. It's a pretty basic BR song stylistically. Nothing amazing, but I like it.

Only RainYeah, they definitely seem to be going for a POB sound. The lyrics to this are pretty decent. Everything about last track applies to this. Could it be? Do I like this album? Have BR come back from two very mediocre attempts? Well, the Resist Stance is next and I've already heard that.

The Resist Stance, as corny a song as a title for a song. This bores me. Kind of like "Requiem For Dissent" or whatever that song was from their last album. They really try to get a "fist-pump" song going. This sounds like it belongs on New America b-sides. Again, not terrible, but I'm not impressed.

Won't Somebody end this song? BR proves here that their ability to turn their punk songs to acoustic does not work for the converse. This sucks. Forced harmonies, bad melody. Seems forced. I really liked the acoustic tracks on New Maps of Hell. It's too bad they had to go and rape it.

The Devil In Stitches. Mediocre track, you've all no doubt heard it many time now. "I can strum twice and make it all go away". Please do...Actually that little part at the beginning is my favorite part. The song's got a decent melody-beat going on at times, but it gets slaughtered by the music trying to fit Greg's verbose lyrics. Okay, to a song I've not heard before again.

Pride and Pallor: Oo, I like it. From the beginning of the song, a very poppy feel. The same appeal "Stranger Than Fiction" has for me. This is the best song so far. Great harmonies, great vocals and lyrics, a fast and pop-feel. THis is what good 21st century BR is about.

Wrong Way Kids: This song's alright. I can tell now that's what this album is gonna be. It's going to be good, 6/10. Just above 5, but not far past. "Woaaah, woaaah, woooooah". When that's the best part of the song, you've got a problem. Really, this song isn't that bad. I write these play-by-play, so I'm writing as the song goes on. By the end, I liked it.

Meeting of the Minds: Oh look, they're trying to be hard. But wait, it's not the "Murder" kind of hard, thank goodness. This song has the right amount of balls and Bad Religion harmony. Good, simple rhymes to sing at a concert. This rips off another BR song, though. I know I've heard this before. Either way, it works.

This starts like "The Adolescents - Who is Who". I didn't look at the song title "Someone to Believe". I was hoping BR was doing a cover. Again, this song is very Process of Belief-ish. Emphasis on harmonies, speed and simple lyric structure.

Avalon: starts off interesting enough, a slow guitar intro, then goes into the normal formula for the album of fast, poppy beats. This song is just uninspiring thus far, though. It's not bad, but it's nothing new.

Cyanide's kind of boring, slower.  The slower songs always seem to lose out.  Net much to say here.

Turn Your Back On Me: Good harmonies and melody again.  Needs a bit of work on lyrics but over all a good, quick pop punk song.

Ad Hominem: Pleeeeeeeeeeeease be about me. At least say ****. If this song doesn't say "****", I'm pissed. Oh, it's an anti-war song. Oh wait, no it's about being mean to poor people. Oh I guess it's just about being mean and generalizing, and the chorus is literally "Ad Hominem" repeated a few times. The lyrics are alright, I guess. Just kind of immature, ironically. It's funny they give no examples of dickhead liberals claiming that all rich people are bad because they are rich and therefore evil. This song needs to end so i can stop reviewing it. And nope, there is no use of any curse words here. Oh well.

Where The Fun Is. This song has the beat of "Empire Strikes First". DON'T WANNA WIN. WHERE THE FUN IS! This is pretty boring. I might just skip over it, it's pretty predictable. I know what I'm going to hear. Slow beat. This song is not where the fun is.

I Won't Say Anything. The last two song titles seem to be messages in Greg's IM to a 16 year old girl. This song's alright. Kind of catchy, slower but moody. A good album ender. "Ain't it funny that machines need a ghost", heh. This might be my favorite song of the album, actually. I'm not sure why. I just feel like doing a little dance in my room, but it kind of feels like a dance-with-someone song.

Overall, this album gets a 7/10. For a BR album, a 5/10. It tries to be Process of Belief mixed with Empire STrikes First. The songs that come off as POB are great. This is better than New Maps, I assure you. You will have to listen a few times, because a lot of the songs really deserve replays to appreciate theme.

After giving it a few listens, I conclude that this is a decent album but nothing better. I agree that "Won't Somebody" was far, far better as an acoustic song.

I liked them all, with the exception of The Devil in Stitches and I Won't Say Anything. I don't like the opening to I Won't Say Anything. It reminds of A Walk.
