In later seasons, we gradually learn that Betty is a horrible human being. You can smell her soul rotting through the TV.

I remember feeling bad for her in the first two seasons, but now, not so much.

Is that the wife or the new secretary?

I don't know how you can hate the wife, she's sitting there telling him that she lives and breathes for him and spends all day in a haze waiting for him to hold her. If she became anything or her soul rotted away, it'd be because of his behavior.

Betty (the hot blond) is Don's wife.

She gradually morphs into a raging, spiteful harpy with the emotional maturity of a 5-year-old.

Not that Don was totally blameless, but her problems went WAY deeper than his philandering.

Peggy, the new secretary, is pretty much awesome throughout.

Thus far it seems so.

But, despite what she becomes, I can't help but feel sorry for the wife's situation. Even if she is a horrible person, he's still doing a horrible thing.

It's probably factually accurate, but it still ticks me off. SO ANNOYED THAT WOMEN FOLK HAD TO LIVE THROUGH THAT BS.

So wait... what are pissed that they had to live through? Are you saying that because one character on a TV show you watched had to deal with an unfaithful husband and an unscrupulous therapist that those were problems that an entire generation of women all had to deal with?

HI MY NAME IS DEXTER AND I KNOW WHAT FICTION IS. I JUST WATCHED THE LOST WEEKEND. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT EVERY GUY IN THE 40'S WAS A RAGING ALCOHOLIC. THAT IS SUCH BULLPOOP.

I just saw Wild Wild West and I had no idea that everybody in the 1860s had to fight giant mechanical spiders.

Man, living in the 1980s with the constant threat of being gunned down by Libyan terrorists in a VW bus because you screwed them over on a deal to sell them plutonium must have been really hard!

I had no idea that everyone in Tudor England was a playwright who had a love affair with Gweneth Paltrow!

And I sure am glad that things like cheating husbands and unethical therapists don't exist anymore!

Sigh. It's fiction but it recreates the conditions in which women had no rights and were treated as objects. I don't enjoy watching that.

But saying that women had no rights in 1961 is kind of ridiculous.

They lacked equality, even if they had some basic human rights they still weren't treated with equal status.

Wait, what happened to Peggy at the end of season 1? She got really fat.

Okay, never mind. Although, that was kind of lame. How do you not notice and why would she gain weight in the face?

I don't really like Betty, but I don't think her soul is rotting. I'm almost through the third season.

Being sick and in bed, I have nothing better to do than watch this show and try and get better.

It just seems as if she's a really bored housewife. It was mean of her to set her friend up for that affair, but other than that, she almost seems dissociative and massively depressed. I wonder why she wanted to get married and have kids - it really doesn't seem as if she wants or likes her kids or would have ever wanted to be the housewife type.
