I don't need it, and I'm not going to get it anytime in the foreseeable future. But it looks like a very enjoyable technological interface that allows users to experience digital media in a new and better way.
Seems really dumb.I was hoping it would be something that could give me an excuse to play with OS x. But like jason said its just a big ipod touch, but unlike jason I dont think that is awesome.

It provides a different kind of user experience that looks promising. If the popularity of the iPod Touch/iPhone is any indication, this is something very compelling to millions of consumers. Neither of those products do anything that other electronics cannot. They just wrap it into a package that is easy, pretty, and functional.
What did you expect when you heard Apple was making a tablet? You knew what a tablet is, you knew what could plausibly be done on one. What would it have needed to do in order for you to be impressed?
The iPad is a terrible name. I've heard someone say that there clearly wasn't a woman in the room when they came up with that name. I totally agree with that.
No, it's stupid. It doesn't do anything that a netbook (which is roughly the same size) could do better and for less money.
I can't agree with that.
Netbooks are slow and usually have poor quality displays. Consequently, the iPad offers a better experience in visual media, especially video. It can also work well as a Kindle-like e-reader, which a netbook could never do. The iPad works as a gaming device, which netbooks generally can't do beyond minesweeper. It also looks more ergonomic and flexible than a netbook in terms of how you can hold it. A netbook has to be used in the same way a laptop is used, so you find yourself awkwardly hunching over this tiny computer in your lap.
I've never been impressed with a netbook. I've never used the iPad, so I can't say I'm impressed with it, but I'm not about to dismiss it as a worthless product.
I could never see myself reading a book on an LCD, or any other backlit display. I'd get eye strain.
For reading books, I'd either want e-ink, or real paper.
Also, as for ergonomics, imagine typing on that thing for a moment, assuming you actually want to carry it around with you (meaning you don't have the keyboard dock). A laptop is good for typing if you're sitting down, with it either in your lap or on the table - the keyboard lies flat, while the hinges hold up the screen at a comfortable viewing angle. A netbook is similar, just with a smaller keyboard. Of course, this pretty much takes away your ability to type while standing up.
A smartphone, on the other hand, lets you type while standing up, using your thumbs. It's slower than a full-sized keyboard, but it works.
This has neither advantage. If you want it in your lap or on your table, the whole thing has to lie flat, meaning that you'd have to hunch over to see the screen. If you're standing, it's too big to type with your thumbs, so you're limited to typing with one hand.
I can't see how using this thing would be more comfortable than either a phone or a laptop.

How about the ability to run more than one application at once, like a real computer? It's certainly powerful enough, but they just ported over the iPhone OS and didn't even bother to add that functionality.
To be honest, it's a pretty slick device. But when I heard that Apple was announcing a tablet, a few skeptics said "so it's just going to be a giant iPod Touch". I I didn't believe it. I would have expected better from apple. This is really nothing new. It might be moderately useful, but it's hardly the revolutionary, transformative device that Steve Jobs hyped it up to be.
jason i would recommendchecking out the newest generation of netbooks. Mine is more than year old basically a dinosaur but afriend of mine bought one last week. it runs windows7 can stream netflix like a champ displays movies wonderfully can run a gambit of games and has 250 gig harddrive. Reglarly priced at 350.
