Wooo, musical embarrasment avoided. I have to say, I like a lot of the Replacements' songs, but I've never quite understood why some people rate them so very highly. There's a whole bunch of bands who are equally as good if not more. I guess maybe you had to experience them in the context of the time to fully appreciate it.
Honestly, and I work with guys who I could never say this to because it would just be blasphemy, but I've always preferred The Replacements over Husker Duuuu. I wasn't old enough to like them while they were around, but they were one of those bands that I liked a lot as a teenager, and therefore they're kind of special to you for the rest of your life. Let it Be is just a fantastic album. After that they were just ok, Tim is good but overrated as all hell.

Yeah what you're saying makes sense, I reckon they're one of those bands that would click with you if you heard them at the right age. I never listened to them properly until a couple of years ago when I was catching up on all that 80s American rock/indie stuff. I really, really love Zen Arcade by HD, but their other stuff doesn't quite match up for me. Admittedly I've not heard it all.
New Day Rising is fantastic as well, and Candy Apple Grey is special to me because it was the first one that I heard (also it has Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely, which is one of my favorite songs)
