Obscenely low pay is much lower than teaching. $1000 a month.

I'm actually in Alexandria, VA, across the Potomac from DC, so I think it's much less likely that I'll be raped/robbed/murdered [by Ron Paul].

As someone who loves a good skyline, I totally agree.  I'm hoping to not stay there longer than a year, but I might end up going to law school in the city...

The crime rate is high, but it's not that much higher than Buffalo's. Places with higher crime rates:

Atlanta
Baltimore
Cleveland
Detroit
Memphis
Miami
Milwaukee
Minneapolis
Nashville
Oakland
Philadelphia
St. Louis
Stockton (CA)

I'm also in the suburbs of Northern VA, not Washington D.C. proper.

It's no secret that I don't care for the city. That said, I'm willing to stay there as long as it is good for us.

Suffice to say, I would not whine about Washington any more than you would whine about it being cold.
