One way to solve the pirate problem: hunt them for sport

http://www.asylum.com/2009/06/26/luxury-yacht-company-offers-pirate-hunting-cruises/

A company in Russia is offering luxury yacht cruises off the coast of Somalia deliberately designed to bait pirates into attacking.

For a small additional fee, the passengers can rent an assault rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition, to shoot at the pirates.

This sure is something.

I really don't know how I feel about this.

On one hand, I think using lethal force to defend against a pirate attack is totally justified.

But deliberately baiting them just so you can see what it feels like to kill, or at least shoot at, a person is something else entirely.

I have no part of me that says this is awesome. It's disgusting and wrong. Pirates are scum, and deserve to be shot at. However, no one should derive such joy that they would opt to spend their leisure time killing other human beings.

What difference would that make?

ridding the world of pirates is a noble task that shouldn't be brought to the level of poaching

I don't think anyone lists sea pirates as an endangered or protected species...

I see a number of problems.

Problem #1: Overzealous pirate hunters may kill people who are not pirates.

Problem #2: There are tactical questions involved in any preemptive military strike, which is what this amounts to. Not only could it fail to reduce piracy, but it could make it easier to recruit more violent pirates who will begin a campaign of murdering ship crews.

Problem #3: One must wonder whether it is just to kill a person who, although intending to pirate a ship, has yet to commit any crime. Such a scenario is not unimaginable when non-experts are leading death-tourism groups after alleged sea pirates.

Really, I could go on. How are you not seeing the problems with this?
