Now Vermont, the first state to actually make gay marriage legal by legislation and not a court decision. They even overruled the ******* governor's veto.
I think New Hampshire has a similar bill going through their Senate right now. D.C.'s city council unanimously decided to recognize gay marriages in other states. Let's hope this trend continues.
There is no chance of it passing in some states at this point. Iowa was a shock to some, but a friend tells me there is actually a pretty large gay community.
We won't see it passed in much of Dixie.
I'd be happy with a federal law, but people will start bitching about states rights.
Simply repealing DoMA would be a good start - that's the federal law which prevents same-sex spouses from participating in any of the federal benefits that come with marriage, such as joint filing of federal income taxes, and spousal benefits for benefits for federal employees.
That part is actually being challenged in federal court, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were held unconstitutional on equal protection grounds, but to get any benefit from it, the couple would still have to get married in a state that allows SSM.
The other main part of DoMA, which says that states are not required to recognize same-sex marriages from other states, might be unconstitutional under the Full Faith and Credit Clause, but I don't know if it's being challenged on those grounds.
On the state level, I think the trend is definitely moving towards recognizing SSM, and if it trends toward legalizing it though the legislature, rather than the courts, it will have far more staying power and legitimacy.
It's, if nothing else, a bad way to garner support. It only furthers the stereotypes in the stubbornly religious that gays are wild, out of control, sex-crazy perverts. It would be like an atheist walking into a church and burning a bible to prove his point.
Churches are almost always open to the public during services, though. I think they were resisting to leave at first, trying to avoid whoever the hell kicks people out of church.
On a barely related note, I have two weirdo neighbors that are the fattest, gayest redneck couple ever. They're always walking around with their shirts off, and racing these gay little remote control cars down the street.
When I think of what their particular sex life must be like, I think of the most perverse, scary things imaginable. Like they're banging each other standing up, and one is dressed like a cheerleader and the other is dressed like a clown, and there's a pig involved, and one of them has to stay in a cage while the other one pees, and like, Goodbye Horses is playing in the background.
