at one point in our discussion my dad said " proof is all around us, like earthquakes and lightning." when I tried to bring up plate tectonics he just tried to talk over me.

I just avoid it by going to church on Christmas Eve (I usually get out of Easter) and singing the hymns but not saying the prayers. When I'm asked why I don't go to church at college I just say I'm not a fan of organized religion. When asked why I don't go when I'm home for an extended period of time I just say I'm tired and want to sleep in.
I thought about it a while ago. And decided though it would probably make my life easier, I wouldn't lie about how I felt about religion or God. But I'm going to stop trying to talk to them about it because they're so closed minded.

my mom started going to church after she had a nervous breakdown and thought she was dying. My dad went to church everyday when he was younger and stopped when he started working. Once my older brother and sister were born my parents would go to easter and christmas services but only for a couple years. I've never been inside of a church for services.

they think as long as they believe, their souls will be saved. They're very selective in what they want to believe. Basically they chose the easiest and most convenient practice.
