back in those days, there was a geographical need for those railroads; alternative, reliable transportation was limited to horses and river-fording, oxen-driven wagons (with the occasional squirrel hunt).
although the high-speed rails would be kickass (especially since i could get to chicago in half of the time it currently takes me), they would be somewhat frivolous now.
on a tangent, an advanced rail system will not be as profitable for those financing it as it was back in the 19th century because the days of hiring chinamen to build the rails are over.
