In the Nineteenth Century...

...the government did not need to use taxpayer money to build railroads.  All they had to do was allow private investors to build profitable, efficient rails.*

What is so different about today?

Note: I'm seriously asking a question.

* I don't want to get into the history of freight rail pricing in the late nineteenth century. I'm speaking only about passenger rails.

The problem is that now we're used to the idea of the government doing it. Obviously.

Also, they should make a train that goes across the entire country, so that when you're on the train, you're in California....

back in those days, there was a geographical need for those railroads; alternative, reliable transportation was limited to horses and river-fording, oxen-driven wagons (with the occasional squirrel hunt).

although the high-speed rails would be kickass (especially since i could get to chicago in half of the time it currently takes me), they would be somewhat frivolous now.

on a tangent, an advanced rail system will not be as profitable for those financing it as it was back in the 19th century because the days of hiring chinamen to build the rails are over.
