Google officially came out against Proposition 8 in California, which would restrict gay marriage in the state.
Other companies that have come out against the measure include Levi Strauss and PG&E.
I don't remember a time when companies would publicly oppose and even provide funds for a social cause. Even if I'm wrong and that happens all the time, that shouldn't take away from the goodness of this cause.
A company owned by a single person should be able to do this, but a publicly owned and traded company is doing a disservice to its owners by making political statements on their behalf, and steal from the stockholders by providing funds to a cause.
The U.S. should just get rid of legal marriage altogether. If people want to be married, let a willing church do it and let the state have nothing to do with it.

Slash has got the Libertarian talking points down, dawg.

the beauty of a publicly owned company is that any investor can sell his/her stock if s/he doesn't like the way the company is run
Google made this decision publicly because many of their employees would be effected negatively by Proposition 8. The welfare of their employees is linked to the welfare of the company as a whole. Google has not given any money to the cause; they've just made their opinion known.
If some homophobe stockholder has a problem with it, they can sell their shares. With Google specifically, though, many of the shares are owned by employees.
Of course I would like marriage to be treated like any other contract, and not legally defined in any special way by the state. However, as long as it IS defined and enforced by the state, it should apply equally to all men and women irrespective of whom they choose as their partner in life.
I don't expect Prop 8 to pass. Every poll shows it trailing significantly, which is interesting, since right after the Supreme Court made its decision, polls showed support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and it had no trouble getting the signatures needed to get on the ballot.
Since same-sex couples have been getting married for a few months now, and society hasn't been brought to its knees, people are realizing that it's not a big deal, and maybe even that it's none of their business.
The same thing happened when the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.
Animals lack the mental capacity to understand a contract, so it's impossible for them to consent to one. A contract requires the consent of both parties. Since animals can't really consent to anything, they can't enter contracts.
For the same reasons, children and insane people can't form valid contracts.
