I never said I like Equus; I've never seen it. However, I appreciate it as being artistic and I applaud Daniel Radcliffe for having the gigantic balls it takes to get on a stage without any clothes on, to play a guy who worships and lusts over horses.
I appreciate none of that.

going on stage naked and playing the role of a man who is in love with horses is something worthy of appreciation?
I can't say if the play was good or not cause I haven't seen it and that'd be up to personal taste anyway, but just because he's naked with a horse doesn't mean a thing to me.

Yes, artistic. That quintessentially human application of creative talent. The external manifestation of imagination. The public baring of one's abilities, and (to be good at it) one's very soul.
Yes, I respect that. Yes, I think that's admirable. Yes, I think it's enviable when done well. Yes, I think it commands appreciation.

To be able to go so far out of your comfort zone to explore the nature of a person you aren't? A person you might fear or even hate?
Pray tell, PIGGIE. How does one write a play that is accidentally provocative? Is a play only allowed to be intellectual and provocative when you like it, and wealthy liberals do not?
Newsflash: ONLY THE BOURGEOISIE ATTEND THEATER IN THE FIRST PLACE.
A man falling in love with horses is stupid. It's stupid. It's ****ing stupid and anyone that likes it and is thoroughly entertained by Harry Potter boning a horse is an idiot. A donkey show isn't a work of art. It's smut. But put it in a theater and it's a goddamn masterpiece.
Look, I've seen plenty of movies where a girl ****s a horse. Total movies, with plots and everything. None of it deserved praise. It's not art, and if it is, it's bad art.
The play isn't about him having sex with a horse. It's about the human condition, just like every piece of good literature (note that I am not calling Equus good). Also from Wikipedia:
"Shaffer was inspired to write Equus when he heard of a crime involving a 17-year-old who had blinded six horses in a small town near London. He set out to construct a fictional account of what might have caused the incident, without knowing any of the details of the crime. The play's action is something of a detective story, involving the attempts of the child psychiatrist, Dr. Martin Dysart, to understand the cause of the boy's actions while wrestling with his own sense of purpose.[2]
However, numerous other issues inform the narrative. Most important are religious and ritual sacrifice themes, and the manner in which character Alan Strang constructs a personal theology involving the horses and the supreme godhead, "Equus". The religious overtones overlap with the boy's sexual attraction to horses and with his normal sexual awakening with a female character. Also important is Shaffer's examination of the conflict between personal values and satisfaction and societal mores, expectations and institutions. In reference to the play's classical structure, themes and characterization, Shaffer has discussed the conflict between "Dionysian" and "Apollonian" values and systems in human life."
Yeah, and the Godfather was about a MURDEROUS GANGSTER. Interesting and enjoyable pieces of art don't have to involve people we like or respect. They can involve contemptible pieces of **** who can still teach us something about ourselves.

Except the people in the Godfather end up destroying themselves and their families because of their activity. I hope this character gets AIDS at the end of the play, dies and finds out theres no such thing as horse heaven.
appreciating still doesn't make sense to me, its like saying you appreciate what the rolling stones have done but don't like their music.
It's more like saying I appreciate a person's willingness to think outside the box, even if I have not sampled any of their work, which may in fact be of poor quality.

yea, but why appreciate that exactly? I would hate to encourage someone to think outside of the box a second time when the first time didn't produce anything worthwhile.

Umm... why do you think Alan (Radcliffe's character, the "horse ****er") is seeing a psychologist? It's because he got caught and was ordered by a court to have psychiatric evaluation. This is not a story about how true love was enjoyed by a boy and his horse. It's a story about how a psychologist comes to terms with his unsatisfying career while examining a pathological, mentally ill, maladjusted boy who worships horses as gods.
