To have two movie experiences that you REALLY enjoy is pretty good for a single year that isn't over yet.
There are plenty of good movies being made. Watch anything made by Darren Aronofsky, who I think is a director that will rank among the likes of Kubrick and Scorsese by the time his career is over.

The actors were mostly monotone and lifeless, because they had no real material to work with.
Yeah, it was pretty, but that, in itself, doesn't make a good movie.
