For the record, British collegiate courses of study are shorter because they are more focused and structured. American higher education values both a well-rounded liberal arts education, but at the same time wants to provide its students with a focus/concentration/major. It's not that American higher education is more difficult; it just tends to force students to take more classes. There are good arguments in favor or either approach.
