Arms have to be at a certain angle, chest isn't a good way to gauge a good pushup.

depending on the angle you work out different muscles in your body, wide stance works out your chest more while having your hand touch works out your triceps. I always make it slightly more shoulderwith apart and go chest barely touching the ground.
