I've been noticing that a lot of contemporary artists have been playfully dark, mixing childish fantasy elements with darker themes of social commentary.

Assuming you aren't asking for a philosophical treatise on aesthetics, I will respond that the second photo moves me by capturing so perfectly the boring normalness of modern existence. How strange is it that we can become accustomed to our technology to the point of falling asleep while in a machine built to travel into the air at unprecedented speeds, wisking us away to faraway places? It just captures how unremarkable modernity really is.
