Really? I think it's great. But then I'm very out of touch with rap music and with what's rated and what's not. My impression is that a lot of the stuff that I and other British people pick up on and like because it sounds kinda outlandish to our ears is also stuff that in the US is very mainstream and a lot of people there are sick of it because it's on constant rotation etc.
Edit: I've also enjoyed tunes by some of the guys that were parodied in the Short Bus Shorty video. That probably shows the sort of level I'm at with rap these days.

I just get a hair in my ass because I'm sick of the increasing critical praise for "artists" such as Rick Ross and Gucci Mane and proclaiming them to be on some whole new next level shit, while other rappers that actually have fucking lyrics continue to get slept on (not saying this is always the case, look at Raekwon).
I'm not even against dumb, ignorant rap (What the hell else can you call The Chronic?), it's just I listen to today's artists and I don't hear any trace of talent whatsoever. It's all about attitude and a catchy beat. When I read what people say about Gucci Mane it drives me bonkers. I've heard people use the word "craft" when talking about him. What craft? Are we even listening to the same song? DUDE HAS A VOCABULARY OF LIKE 5 WORDS. I just can't understand why someone would want to listen to a rapper who can't fucking rap. But if you can who am I to stop you. I'll just go back to being a crotchety old man and telling whoever will listen about the good ol' days.

I totally hear what you're saying - I guess the difference is that for me (these days anyway) music matters more than lyrics, even when listening to hip-hop; when I put on a new track the first things I respond to are the beats and the overall feel of it and sometimes I don't even pay much attention to what they're saying. I'm aware that with some styles that's prob not the best approach to take, but there you go. Do you listen to much by the Odd Future guys (Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt etc) ? They seem to be getting a lot of hype over here just now. They've got quite a lot going on in terms of more imaginative lyrical content (and fairly decent MC skills as well). Don't like everything I've heard from them, but when they're good they're really good.

Not really. I don't have strong feelings towards them one way or the other. It's pretty gimmicky, but I can see the creativity and talent in what they do.

Yeah I guess I can see that - it might be the exact word I'd use to describe them, but there is something ott/cartoonish about their imagery and personas at times. But then that 'horrorcore' sort of style has quite a long and established tradition by now.
Danny Brown is another guy who I'm enjoying at the moment and he's a good place to go to if you want someone with more legitimate MC skills and interesting lyrics than the Gucci/WackaFlocka/Rick Ross style of rap but without the (perhaps overly) self-conscious leftfield aspects of the OF crew. ..hmm, not sure why I'm trying to convince you to like rappers that I like all of a sudden, it's not even as if I listen to that much hip-hop at the moment. But there you go.
