Well, since you brought it up...in my very limited experience in that world, all of which is as an outside observer, most people get through it OK, after putting in a few years and paying down their loans, and they move onto something less soul-crushing.
A relatively small number of people thrive in that environment and end up on the partner track, and another minority of people have complete mental breakdowns. I've met a few members of the latter group on the doc review circuit.
I'm sure I won't have a breakdown, but I'm less certain that I'll be able to strike the work/life balance I want. I'd like to see my wife and children from time to time, you see.
