To be fair, the 3D effects in Avatar were very impressive.

I have no problem with releasing movies in 3D. When it's done right, it can add a lot to the visual spectacle of a film. And if it's a big-budget action movie, the visual spectacle is like 90% of the reason you're seeing it in the first place, so there's definitely added value.

I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with people craving immersive entertainment experiences while not caring so much about what they are being immersed into.

3D should be a unique experience, not something I see at every movie. How long until the next Adam Sandler movie is in 3D? You can enjoy its awfulness in a whole new dimension.

Technically, if 3D were to be a unique experience, the Avatar would have been the only 3D movie.

Filming in 3D is significantly more expensive, so I think it will be a long time before we'll be seeing "My Best Friend's Wedding 2...IN THREEEEEEEE DEEEEEEEEEE!"

I think (or hope) that people will realize that it's appropriate for some movies, and not for others.

Also, it seems to work much better with animated films. Avatar was like 95% CGI, so it looked good there, but the few scenes that were predominately live-action didn't look nearly as good in 3D, I thought.

I've seen Avatar and Alice in Wonderland in 3D. It was kinda cool for Avatar but added nothing to Alice in Wonderland.
I wonder if these debates about 3D were similar to the ones that may have occurred when colour film started to be used.

I don't know how color could be seen as not adding something to the film. I can see how 3D movies would give me a gigantic migraine.

I think the reason people are so skeptical about 3D film technology is that it's supposedly been done before. Even though there is little comparison between the effects used in Avatar and the effect created by the blue/red blur comic books with cardboard glasses, there is nevertheless the persistent suspicion that the new 3D movies are just gimmicks, too.

If you look at early color movies, some of them were extremely gimmicky. Like with some 3D movies that come out today, where they just use it to make stuff fly at your face, to constantly remind you that you're watching a 3D movie, early color movies did similar things.

A couple characters would be walking and talking about a plot point, and all the sudden "OH HEY LOOK IT'S A CAGE FULL OF TROPICAL BIRDS FOR NO REASON! YOU DIDN'T FORGET THAT THIS MOVIE IS IN COLOR, DID YOU? GOOD! BECAUSE HERE'S A 5-MINUTE SCENE CONSISTING OF LITTLE MORE THAN A FIREWORKS DISPLAY. ALSO, LOOK AT THESE FLOWERS AS I ZOOM IN ON THEM! HOLY CRAP LOOK AT THE COLORS!"

Every movie she seems to get more and more beautiful. It was one of the few times I got a full chubby from just seeing someone on a movie screen.
