As for freeways, I occasionally use "the" in front of the number, but I usually don't.

i had never heard "the" used until i met count, then when i lived in cali i started doing it too, just to fit it. when i moved back here i had to re-train myself to leave "the" off

I don't use "the" and anyone who does is wrong.

The correct way to say it is as follows:

"Take 66 west until you reach 29 south."

In the above exception noted by cheese, "the" is used for "the bypass" and not "the 501".

Yeah, it's a regional thing. So, as Piggie and I are both Western New Yorkers, we both say it. Take the 219 to..., Head south on the 109, etc.

But no one in Buffalo really uses the word freeway. We tend to use a few other terms like throughway or expressway.

Anyways, in case you're wondering how Arizona says it, we use "the" when referring to freeways. I had never noticed or thought about it before.
