I haven't seen the movie, but judging from the trailer it's homophobia masquerading as anti-homophobic satire.
So exactly the same trick as Ali G and Borat, just shifted on to another prejudice, then? Not in any great hurry to see this, but I do find most things that he does at least quite funny. Sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. However, I don't buy the political defences of his intent. Borat in particular was at heart just about poking fun at things the audience find strange and different to them.
I'm sick of people saying it's homophobic. The only people who will look at the movie and form an opinion that all gay people act like the Bruno character weren't ever going to be very enlightened individuals anyway. Much of the movie is dedicated to Bruno trying to become straight, and what a ridiculous idea that is.
For all the people who are laughed at in these movies, would anyone behave differently? I know I would be very uncomfortable if some outrageously flamboyant gay man just started throwing himself at me, disrobing, etc.
As for the people who reveal their own prejudices, like the anti-Muslims and anti-Semites featured in Borat... well, I just don't find that funny. I think it's disgusting and sad, infuriating in many ways.
I don't know... I just don't get Sacha Baron Cohen, and I suspect that it isn't because his brand of humor is too sophisticated for me.

Yeah, in fairness I can't comment on Bruno in particular as I obv haven't seen it yet. The structure of Jason's summary just struck a depressing chord with my experiences of his earlier work. (Though you could perhaps defend some parts of Ali G - but I don't think I personally would be up to it. Borat is just straight-up stereotype-giggles imo. And enjoyably so, but y'know....)
Of course you cringe during many interviews as well as laugh. There is a part in the movie where "Bruno" offers parents a chance at their children being in a photo shoot if they will allow them to do outrageous things to their kids like mock crucifixion. I was laughing and almost screaming at the screen during that part.
I took my guy to go see this but probably wouldn't have bothered seeing it if I didn't get free movies. It was entertaining with some really hilarious parts.. not really my cup of tea either but he does have some crazy guts to do something like that. ..****ing crazy.
I know, right?? It tells you that my life is **** because I work at a movie theatre. ..and that I have a pretty awesome boyfriends.
see? SWEET!
..although, I just quit the theatre and started full time at a waxing salon. ..which I believe was what one of my first conversations on the BRMB was about. life is fun.
