If I were in the Navy, and heard this news, I'd be like "fuck yeah, this is the kind of shit I signed up for!"

Only to find out that you don't get to shoot them, and instead have to sit there and look on while ransom payments are made.

I didn't know that this was true. Do you have a citation?

I know that most companies that operate merchant ships don't allow their crews to be armed, because armed resistance to a pirate attack could easily get them killed.

I didn't know that there was a law against this, though.

I heard they can't legally fire on pirate ships until they have been fired upon. That would seem to imply a way that they can fire back.
