for the same reason that a fixed number of tetris pieces must be arranged in a certain order so that a line is filled
note that shared between the light green piece and the yellow piece are 15 units^2 of area in both pictures. however, in the second configuration, the way in which they are joined does not allow the contiguousness as was present in the first. that is, (two units)*(eight units) - 1 = (three units)*(five units)
moronic spell-check doesn't recognize "contiguousness" as a word
"Contiguousness" is a rare word to use. The OED only has an entry from 1622-62. "Contiguity", however, has much more recent entries. Both words make perfect sense within the structure of English word creation. "Contiguity" seems to have beat out "contiguousness" in usage, though, maybe because of its prominence in David Hume's philosophy.
I'm not saying you shouldn't use the word "contiguousness". I'm saying you shouldn't get pissy when your spell check doesn't recognize non-standard words.

Thankyou Awkward Smile. My brain can stop freaking out now. Looking back now, I don't know why I didn't try working it out using my survey misclose program on my calculator.
