But a mime ceases to be a mime when the actor is not in costume. The costume transforms the actor into his id. He is no longer the actor, but a mime, capable of expressing emotions that the actor cannot, and capable of acting in ways that normal ego prohibits a man from acting. As soon as the make up comes off, the id is restrained by reason and the mime ceases to exist.
