I like how Doyle Redland's journalistic objectivity was a little bit compromised by his infatuation with her.
And yeah, I think we've all been there - the cute, slightly unusual girls who work almost exclusively at coffee shops and record stores, who you think are giving you lots of personal attention and may even like you, but really, they're just good at their jobs.

That seems to be entirely your misinterpreting of friendliness and helpfulness with sexual interest. I see no reason to imagine her "[counting her] tips and [laughing] all the way to the bank." Since when is it bad to be friendly and helpful?

Part of my problem is that I try not to be that guy, so when girls do come on to me and give me signs as to their intentions, I just assume that I created those signs in my head.
I am in the same situation as Slash. Girls have told me before they were interested in me, but that I never picked up on the signals. It's normally because I don't want to be the fool who goes in for something that isn't there.
