I had a happy sunshine weekend! Although today's my birthday, I celebrated it yesterday.

I went up to Point Reyes with my girlfriend. It was great.

It's only about 90 minutes north of SF, but I'd never been there. Holy crap is it pretty.

Stuff we saw:

(elephant seals)

We also visited an oyster farm, had some fresh oysters, and then sat on the beach for a while.

And then I found out that she bought me Beatles Rock Band. It was a good weekend!

So THAT'S how people can tolerate living in California!

Look what else we saw.

These are Tule elk, which only live in the grasslands and marshes of California. Point Reyes is one of their main habitats, and the place where, around 100 years ago, the majority of the living population (a few dozen individuals) was released, in a last-ditch effort to save the species. Now they number in the thousands.

This is a baby elephant seal. Apparently their mothers abandon them after one month, so this guy is on his own.

This is the oyster farm we went to:

And these are the views from the picnic area:

In conclusion, Point Reyes is a very nice place to visit.

Oysters are awesome. I love them fried, but they are pretty good straight out of the shell too.

I kind of agree with Pizza about oysters, but still, Point Reyes looks like a great place to visit. To me one of the most appealing things about California seems to be the coastline itself.
John (or anyone else), have you ever explored along Highway 1, between San Fran and LA? I remember seeing a documentary a while back where a couple of guys travelled the whole length of it northbounds, and it just looked amazing.
PS - hope you had a good birthday, we all seemed to miss it, durr durr durr.

I've taken highway 1 as far south as Monterey, I think. If you're driving south long distance, it's much faster and more practical to take Interstate 5. But it's tough to beat the views along highway 1.

There are a couple really nice small towns about an hour south of SF along highway 1. They make for a nice day trip.

Cool. Yeah, I guess it's not really a getting-places-fast kind of road.

I did that drive this summer. It's really gorgeous. We have some sunset pictures from that drive. We did San Fran and Monterey Bay down to Hearst Castle as a mini driving vacation. We took the one the whole way down from San Fran.
