If it's one thing the Cold War proved, it's that the Russkies know and fear retaliation from America and allied western countries. To do this would be to sign their death warrants.
In all honesty, it would probably better for the long-term interests of the Russian people, assuming some kind of Marshall Plan to rebuild their economy.
I can see the Russian government (read: Putin) talking about how great the invasion of Georgia for years as the plutocracy that is Russian society tumbles uncontrollably downhill.
They are convinced that these missile defense systems are actually nuclear bombs pointed at them. Russia is a xenophobic nation. Every single bad thing that has happened to Russia was some other countries fault. I wouldn't put it past them to attack Poland, especially if no one is going to stop them.

Really? Which other country was to blame for their oppressive autocratic monarchy? The Bolshevik revolution?
The Royal Family was corrupted by the West. Alexandra, the wife of Nicholas was Queen Victoria's granddaughter. I'm no expert of Russian history, but the book Fall of Eagles covers some of this. My neighbors are Russian and I've had conversations with them about this. They told me that as kids they were taught that the United States stole Alaska.

I do know that the Romanov family royal colors were purple, green, and gold. They visited New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and their colors just stayed around.
