That's one of the reasons I love that album so much. They created their own mythology with the music and the style to a level that nobody ever took it before

I think it is. While nothing they did after 36 Chambers could ever top it, it's a really solid album, especially for a double CD, which usually tend to be unnecessarily long (although some songs on the second disc are just plain awful).

Okey dokey. Yeah I think I share your skepticism about double albums. Sandinista is a particularly bad example. How many of those track really need to be there? I feel sorry for the Clash fans when it first came out, and you had to get a friggin 3 LP set. How clumsy and expensive would that be?
I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LISTEN TO SANDINISTA FROM BEGINNING TO END IN ITS ENTIRETY. I've tried. Once you get to side three it's like "OH MY GOD THERE'S FOUR MORE SIDES OF THIS?!?!?"
